Metabolism is the whole set of chemical processes your body uses to turn food into energy and keep you alive. Here is what it really means, what drives how fast it runs, and why you cannot simply boost it.
Few words are thrown around more loosely than "metabolism". It gets blamed for weight gain, credited for keeping people slim and used to sell endless teas and supplements. Behind the marketing, though, metabolism is something specific and remarkable: the constant chemistry that keeps you alive. Metabolism is the entire set of chemical reactions your body carries out to turn food and drink into energy, and to build, repair and maintain its tissues. It is not a single organ or a speed dial. It is the combined activity of countless reactions happening in every cell, every second of every day.
Those reactions fall into two broad types:
The energy released and used in all this is measured in calories. Understanding metabolism therefore goes hand in hand with understanding how calories and energy balance work, because the food groups you eat are the raw fuel feeding the whole system.
A common misconception is that exercise burns the bulk of your daily calories. For most people, it does not. Your total daily energy expenditure has three main components.

By far the biggest slice is your resting metabolic rate — the energy needed simply to keep your heart beating, lungs working, brain humming and cells repairing while you do nothing at all. Even a low-key signal of how hard your body is ticking over, like your resting heart rate, hints at this constant background work.
Most of the calories you burn today will go on simply staying alive, not on the gym.
Why does one person seem to burn through food while another does not? The honest answer is that the differences are usually smaller than people imagine, and they are mostly explained by a few factors.
Bigger bodies need more energy to run, so larger people generally have higher metabolic rates. Crucially, lean tissue such as muscle is more metabolically active than fat. The more muscle you carry, the more energy your body uses at rest. This is the single most actionable lever most people have.
Metabolic rate tends to ease down with age. Part of this is a gradual change in the body's cells, but a large part is simply that people often lose muscle and move less as the years pass. Keeping active and maintaining muscle blunts much of the decline.
On average, men tend to have higher metabolic rates than women, largely because they typically carry more muscle and are larger. Genetics also play a modest role, setting some of your individual baseline.
Illness, certain hormones such as thyroid hormones, body temperature and some medications can also nudge metabolic rate up or down. Thyroid conditions in particular can have a real effect, which is why unexplained weight or energy changes are worth discussing with a clinician.
This is the question the wellness industry loves, and the realistic answer is sobering. You cannot meaningfully boost your metabolism with special foods, drinks or supplements. Chilli, green tea, coffee and similar items have effects that are tiny, short-lived or both, and "fat-burning" supplements rarely deliver what they promise.
What does work is less glamorous but genuinely effective:
That last point matters. Very restrictive diets can backfire: as you eat far less for a long time, the body lowers its resting energy use and you also become smaller, so you burn fewer calories overall. This adaptation is one reason rapid weight loss is so hard to keep off, and why sustainable habits beat extreme ones.
Because metabolism governs energy use, it is central to weight — but it is not the whole story. Body weight reflects the long-run balance between the energy you take in as food and drink and the energy you use. A "slow metabolism" is rarely the sole cause of weight gain; far more often, small persistent imbalances over time are at work, alongside sleep, stress and activity levels.
Understanding this is freeing rather than discouraging. It means the levers that matter — what and how much you eat, how much you move, how much muscle you keep — are largely within reach.

Body size, muscle, age, sex and genetics set the pace far more than any food or supplement can. You cannot meaningfully "boost" it from a bottle, but you can raise your total daily energy use by building muscle and staying active.
