First past the post produces wrong-winner elections, safe seats where 90% of votes are wasted, and governments with absolute power on minority support. Proportional representation would make every vote count, force parties to cooperate, and produce parliaments that reflect how people actually voted. Critics say PR leads to weak coalition governments and gives extremists a platform, but most European democracies use PR successfully. The case for PR is overwhelming, but Labour and Conservatives benefit from FPTP and will never reform it unless forced by electoral pressure. Until voters demand reform loudly enough to force politicians to act, Britain will remain stuck with a voting system that is undemocratic, unfair, and indefensible. First past the post is not fit for purpose, and it is time to demand something better.
